Mailbox Bed Renovation

Posted by Jake on 13 July, 2009

Last fall I planted two Mums and two Bush Daisies for an autumn scene at the mailbox. This past spring I moved the Mums around back and planted different annuals. The Bush Daisies just kept growing and growing and as they were they were smothering the annuals and the Purple Fountain Grass. I decided yesterday the Bush Daisies had to go; they had grown from small $3 annuals to small shrub size plants.

At Home Depot I picked up three pots of Heliconia and a Croton ‘Mammy’. That is seriously what the tag on the Croton said, lol. I planted them and divided the Lirope that was already there and left the Purple Fountain Grass. The area now look a lot better and less growded. It is also nice to add more of a tropical look t the front yard. Now lets go on to the pictures:

Three New Plants

Posted by Jake on 6 July, 2009

Right before I left for Kentucky in June I planted a Peruvian Daffodil, Hymenocallis festalis. Well, I forgot about it until yesterday I noticed something coming through the mulch. At first I thought it was an Amaryllis, but I knew I hadn’t planted an Amaryllis there. Anyway, I am now excited again, because it is like a new plant that I now have, but forgot about.

The second new plant is called Rough Horsetail, Equisetum hyemale. It is a plant that I was interested when I lived in Kentucky, but never actually purchased it. What reminded me of it was at an amusement park called Kings Island in Ohio that I visted when I was in Kentucky. It was planted near a que line for a roller coaster and I sw it and thought to myslef what it was. It finally came to me and I was like, “I have to get some of it.”, so I did.

While looking online on the site I bought the Horsetail I saw the Broadleaf Cattail,  Typha latifolia. I know it is an odd purchase, but I like the way they look and thought I would try one out. We will see how it goes and I will ofcourse report it here.

I got the Horsetail and Cattail from a nursery in Memphis, TN called Dove Creek Gardens. I ordered them on a Friday night and they arrived last Friday for me to plant. I would reccomend them for your Ornamental Grass, Bamboo, and Water Garden Plant needs.

I hope you had a great Fourth of July and I hope you have a great week. We are suppose to get quite a bit of rain through Thursday, I really hope the weatherman is right.

New Additions

Posted by Jake on 17 June, 2009

I went to Home Depot yesterday and picked up some new plants. I wasn’t planning on getting any…or was I? I thought about not getting anything after I decided to ge three thing because of the heat and the lack of rain. I mean we hit 99F yesterday and have been in the mid to upper 90’s for awhile. I ended up getting and bringing home Areca Palm,  False Aralia and Firecracker Plant. While I was driving home I noticed it was getting dark towards the beaches direction and knew I need to get home. I wanted to get the plants in the ground before that sweet rainfall fell, these plants need a good natural before they have to go through the heat of today. I was able to get it all planted even with thunder and lightning all around me. I was able to split the Areca Palm in 5 differnt locations.

We ended up getting over about 2.50″ of rain after our afternoon storm and the storm after midnight today. I think the new plants have had plenty of natural water. I now will probably need to cover them today to shade them from the strong 90F sun. I will also need to water them so they have plenty of care before I leave Thursday morning for Kentucky.

Have A Great Day,

Jake

Easter Gifts

Posted by Jake on 13 April, 2009

I got a nice gift for Easter, a Persian Palm! I am really excited and planted it out in a bed yesterday. I also found myself a nice little gift at a Wal-Mart, a Silver Dollar Eucalyptus for only $6.00.

Yesterday I also noticed that my Spindle Palm is starting to push out a new spear. I was begining to worry about it since it saw 23 degrees and was only covered with a garbage bag, I know plastic is bad. I thought I woud show you all some pictures.

Have A Great Day,

Jake
